The death of a King isn't something most of us think about other than in fairy tales. But, here in Thailand, one look at the streets will tell you that it's an accepted reality. A year of mourning is in order for the death of the Thai King, a man who was truly loved by his people. I never quite understood the gravity of the situation until I arrived. A good 20-30% of the people are still dressed in all black, and a lot of public services are now free as a respect/sign of the King's love for all.
I won't begin to pretend I know anything about the history of Thailand nor its monarchy, but I am beginning to understand just what he's meant to his people. Following a local these last two days has opened my more spiritual side, as I sway from Buddhist temple to Hindu worship, and begin to truly take in love. I was in awe on Christmas Day in the Catholic Church, but it didn't sit with me. It was a day that came and went. I've spent the last 48 hours partaking in some Buddhist rituals, and the shear power of emotion is enough to overtake you. The lay life is the most common practice of Buddhism here, but many make it a point to visit temple at least once a day, often times more.
I feel more complete now. Having given my offerings, said my prayers, and truly just enjoyed the beauty of the temples and wats (some are breathtaking) I begin I'm starting to understand more the call to religion, but more specifically to Buddhism, which would be more considered a way of life rather than a religion. It's something you can easily align your stars to; do good always.
I've also been very fortunate that someone was willing to explain, and to share with me some of the traditions of Thai and Buddhist culture. One in particular thats worrysome, is the usage of Buddha in tattoos, and other ways that would be considered a devotion. These are actually highly seen as a sign to disrespect, so think twice before you get that cool Buddha selfie, or Buddha tattoo.
